New 'Demon Slayer' installment becomes highest-grossing Japanese film ever

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle surpasses $555 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.

According to Box Office Mojo on 22/9, the film reached a new box office milestone, currently ranking 9th among the highest-grossing films of the year, surpassing The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Captain America: Brave New World.

For the first time, a Japanese animated film topped the US box office for two consecutive weeks, with total revenue of $104.73 million. However, in its home country, the film has yet to surpass the record held by Mugen Train (2020), which currently holds the number one position in the Japanese market with 40.75 billion yen (over $275 million).

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is the first in a trilogy of films directed by Haruo Sotozaki. Set in Taisho-era Japan, the story follows Tanjiro Kamado, who returns home to discover his family murdered and his sister Nezuko transformed into a demon. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps to hunt down Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor of all demons. In this new installment, the characters enter Infinity Castle, where a confrontation unfolds between the Hashira (Pillars) and the Upper Rank demons.

Screen Daily praised the film's impressive use of light and effects, particularly with water, fire, and smoke, contrasting against the dark backdrop of Infinity Castle. However, the magazine also noted that several extended flashback sequences slowed the film's pace. Total Film considered it a significant step up in action compared to Mugen Train, while IGN felt the film didn't strike a good balance between the climax and the flashback scenes.

Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina return to handle the music and sound effects. The Guardian stated that the electronic orchestral score enhances every slash, gust of wind, and footstep in the dark environment. However, the runtime of over two and a half hours, combined with numerous flashbacks, occasionally slows the fighting tempo. New viewers might struggle to follow the antagonist's motives without having seen the previous installments.

Demon Slayer is a manga series written and illustrated by Gotōge Koyoharu, first published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2/2016. In 9/2019, the manga was adapted into a 26-episode anime series, which became an online sensation. According to publisher Shueisha on 17/7, the manga has sold over 220 million copies.
