Phuong Linh: 'I forged resilience while studying in the US'

Miss Phuong Linh discusses overcoming a mental health crisis during her time studying in the US and how it shaped her future.

After being crowned Miss Universe Vietnam 2025, Phuong Linh discussed her journey to self-confidence and her future plans.

During the competition, you garnered attention for sharing your experience with a mental health crisis. Could you elaborate on what happened?

During my first two years in the US, I struggled with feelings of inadequacy. I mostly stayed home while my peers actively participated in clubs and built strong social networks. I felt insecure and constantly compared myself to them. At 18, not knowing how to share my struggles, my anxieties grew, leading to increased stress and worry.

I also discovered I had food allergies. My physical health deteriorated, further impacting my mental state.

I didn't share my difficulties with my family to avoid worrying them. Some friends who knew offered advice and support. Once I calmed down, I sought help through online resources and counseling. Gradually, my emotional state stabilized, allowing me to regain balance and focus on my studies and research.

What did you learn from that experience?

I learned to acknowledge my limitations and seek help when needed. I also developed perseverance and resilience, overcoming my previous insecurities.

Studying abroad isn't always as easy as it seems, especially without family and friends nearby. When sick, you must schedule appointments far in advance and explain your symptoms in English. Even such small situations can be challenging, requiring adaptability.

I realized my experience is common among international students. Learning about the statistics related to depression and tragic outcomes due to mental health issues was shocking. During the pageant, I focused on my project, Life to Life, which provides a hotline and network to support young people. I want them to know they are not alone. I'm committed to using my Miss Cosmo Vietnam prize money to fund this project.

How have you cultivated independence since studying abroad?

I worked as a library assistant, helping students find books and resources. This not only helped cover living expenses but also taught me valuable work skills.

After graduating, I've worked for three years and have a stable life. I'm no longer financially dependent on my parents. However, I haven't reached complete financial freedom yet. This is a long-term goal I'm actively working towards. I'm learning to manage my spending, invest in myself wisely, and save for the future.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life?

During the final round, I quoted Michelle Obama: "When you educate a woman, you educate a generation." This resonates deeply with me, especially when I reflect on my mother's life, my greatest role model.

My mother grew up in a modest family in the mountainous Cao Bang province. Despite challenging circumstances, she pursued a university degree in Accounting and Finance. She worked in an office in northern Vietnam before moving south. Later, she started her own company producing electrical wires and components, a predominantly male-dominated field. Despite facing ups and downs, she persevered.

My mother may not be a famous or incredibly wealthy entrepreneur, but her accomplishments are extraordinary to me. Seizing opportunities transformed her life, enabling her to provide for my two brothers and me. When I feel weak or uncertain, I think of her for strength and inspiration.

My father is calm and gentle. While my mother is the pioneer, he supports her decisions. Though he doesn't speak much, he's always present, caring for us in his way. Their greatest lesson has been to live ethically and choose the right path.

How did your family react to your decision to compete in the pageant?

When I considered competing, I consulted my family, and they were all supportive. I believe their support stems from my actions since returning to Vietnam to work, which reassured them.

As the youngest child, I was always surrounded by the love of my parents and two older brothers. I had a peaceful, smooth childhood. However, I never wanted to be dependent. I enjoy caring for others and striving for harmony. I'm grateful for my supportive family, which has allowed me to pursue my dreams.

Looking ahead, I want to tell them, "Don't worry, I've grown up and internalized your teachings. I'll always choose the right path." My parents are now retired. I want them to enjoy their retirement without worrying about me.

What are your thoughts on H’Hen Nie's advice to stay determined and resilient in the face of temptation?

Her advice is invaluable. I admire H'Hen Nie for her contributions to the community and how she inspires young women. I'll remember this as I navigate my journey ahead.

My life has changed rapidly in a short time, yet I've maintained my character, unfazed by the glamour of showbiz. I believe that honesty, integrity, my family's support, and my work experience will help me overcome temptations.

What are you like outside of the pageant world?

I have some hidden traits, like being playful and a bit girly. I also enjoy adventure. I planned to take a scuba diving course in Phu Quy Island, but my Miss Universe Vietnam schedule prevented it. In my free time, I enjoy the gym and dancing, which require discipline and perseverance.

I'm also spontaneous, often acting on my impulses. However, I'm mindful of the consequences and avoid recklessness.

Before, my life was simple: getting ready for work, grocery shopping, cooking, exercising, having coffee, watching movies, crafting, and painting. After the pageant, I'm gaining new experiences and adapting to the routines and responsibilities of a Miss Universe Vietnam.

At 26, I view romantic relationships as a natural part of life. Love adds color and teaches empathy. For now, I'd like the focus to remain on my activities and community projects, so I prefer to keep this aspect of my life private.

What areas are you looking to improve upon in the future?

I need to improve my public speaking and communication skills to better convey messages and connect with audiences. During the competition, I had limited time to master walking in high heels and stage presence. These skills aren't perfect yet. I'll learn from experienced colleagues at my new agency.

I've promised myself not to be swayed by negativity on social media. To achieve this, I'll focus on personal growth and refine my interpersonal skills.

At Miss Cosmo later this year, I want to showcase more facets of myself. I'll launch a "Road to Miss Cosmo" series to maintain momentum and enthusiasm. I hope to be a cultural ambassador, sharing the image of Vietnamese women with the world.

I've resigned from my IT Compliance Officer position to focus on my role as Miss Universe Vietnam.
