Phuong My Chi accused of 'imitating Blackpink's Jennie'

Singer Phuong My Chi apologized after her performance at the Lan Song Xanh 2025 awards led many to associate it with the image of Korean artist Jennie.

Phuong My Chi participated in the Lan Song Xanh 2025 awards ceremony with a mashup of "Bong Phu Hoa" and "Ech Ngoai Day Gieng" - two songs she previously performed successfully at Sing! Asia 2025 and Em Xinh Say Hi, respectively. Phuong My Chi delivered a vibrant performance with a dance troupe. The act received significant applause from the audience at the venue.

Following the program, Phuong My Chi faced accusations of copying when audiences noted similarities between her performance and Jennie's act with Blackpink at the Melon Music Awards (MMA) 2025. Specifically, Phuong My Chi wore a sheer cloak while standing on a high platform, with silk ribbons held by dancers below. She then removed the cloak to reveal a sensual outfit underneath, dancing with her troupe. On social media, viewers claimed Phuong My Chi imitated Jennie, from the stage setup to the styling. However, some fans suggested it was merely a coincidence of ideas.

On the evening of 31/1/2025, the Gen Z singer spoke out on her personal page, not directly addressing the plagiarism claims but taking responsibility for the incident. She wrote: "Regarding last night's performance, whatever the reason, it caused the audience to have doubts about Phuong My Chi's originality, creating an association with the image of other artists. This is certainly not what I aim for in my journey to clarify musical values. I extend my sincere apologies to the audience for delivering an incomplete experience with the performance."

In addition to her apology, Phuong My Chi stated that, in the spirit of respecting the audience and the creative journey, she and her team agreed not to post further information related to the performance on any platforms. She did not offer additional explanation regarding the concept for her Lan Song Xanh 2025 performance. The awards organizing committee did not comment on the matter.

Phuong My Chi rose to fame in the music industry at age 10 after being the runner-up of The Voice Kids Vietnam 2013 competition. With over a decade in music, she has released numerous music videos and albums including "Thuong Ve Mien Trung" (2017), "16 Xuan Trang" (2019), and "Bat Nha Thuyen" (2020). In 2023, she released the album "Vu Tru Co Bay", inspired by Vietnamese literary works. She has also acted in film projects like "Hai Lua" (2014), "Nha Gia Tien" (2025), and the web-drama "Tiem Hoa Di Ghe". In 2025, Phuong My Chi won third place in the Sing! Asia competition, was the champion of Em Xinh Say Hi, and received the Breakthrough Artist award at Lan Song Xanh.

Jennie, born in 1996, debuted with Rose, Lisa, and Jisoo as part of Blackpink in 2016. Initially, she was recognized as the group's fashion trendsetter. Currently, the star is in high demand for fashion shows, events, magazine shoots, and serves as an ambassador for luxury brands. She also has an impressive solo career with hits like "Solo", "You & Me", and "Mantra". Over the past year, she achieved success with the song "like Jennie" from her debut album Ruby, earning numerous Korean awards.
