Sao Mai champion Le Minh Ngoc: 'I'm a private person'

Le Minh Ngoc describes herself as introverted, taking her time to hone her skills while her peers release new music.

Three years after winning the Sao Mai 2022 folk music competition, Le Minh Ngoc is embarking on a new musical direction. She recently starred in and sang for the war-themed musical film, A Letter to the Future, directed by Lam Ha, commemorating the 80th anniversary of National Day. The film showcases Ngoc's transition from folk to classical music, performing revolutionary songs in two different roles. At the film's press conference on 17/9, the singer discussed her genre shift and career perspective.

- Why did you choose classical music when you're known for folk music?

- Right after the Sao Mai 2022 competition, I set my sights on classical music, driven by my passion for it. When I perform classical pieces, I feel like myself. The more I explore it, the more I want to discover. Several teachers have even remarked that my vocal cords naturally position themselves like those of a classical singer (laughs). The romantic emotions inherent in folk music provide a foundation for me to sing with greater tenderness and feeling. I hope my performances resonate with the audience.

I've been diligently practicing and refining my vocal technique. Winning first place in the 2023 National Classical Singing Competition boosted my confidence in pursuing this genre. Fortunately, my decision has been supported by my teachers and family.

- Classical music often has a niche audience. What motivated you to choose this genre?

- It's not about personal gain; I believe youth should be about contribution. Some singers crave fame, but I want to preserve and maintain this genre for future generations. Many classical songs are tied to historical milestones of our nation. Learning about them makes me proud to perform them. I'm also inspired by People's Artists Quang Tho and Duong Minh Duc, and I learn from younger singers like Viet Danh, my colleague at the Military Music and Dance Theater.

Since childhood, my mom has jokingly called me an "old soul." I also felt a bit out of place because my friends all enjoyed pop or international music. However, I believe there are other young people who want to sing the same genre, and I won't be alone on this path.

My main challenge is maintaining my health, as classical singing demands physical stamina. Despite a busy schedule of studying and performing, I make time for an hour of gym every day, without fail. Even if I get home at 8 or 9 p.m., I still try to squeeze in a run to maintain my endurance.

- Three years after Sao Mai 2022, what are your thoughts on not having achieved a major breakthrough yet?

- After the competition, I focused on personal growth and learning, aiming to present the most polished version of myself. During that time, I attended press conferences for my colleagues' new releases. This didn't rush me; instead, I waited for the right moment to launch high-quality products. Now, I feel confident in my voice and technique, hoping to be well-received by the public.

Despite being in the arts, I'm a private person. I consider this a personal limitation. Unlike some colleagues who constantly update their social media, I'm less active (laughs). I prefer to share only stage-related content.

At the farewell party for international military delegations after the A80 ceremony, I performed "On the Hopeful Field," a popular Chinese song. It was well-received, and Chinese soldiers presented me with flowers and took photos. The video of that moment unexpectedly went viral on TikTok. Perhaps I'll focus more on social media to connect with the audience.

- What are your thoughts on the opinion that Sao Mai has lost its appeal and its contestants lack recognition?

- In a society constantly evolving with many new platforms for art enthusiasts, I believe Sao Mai remains a prestigious competition, providing opportunities for folk and classical music. The program has a long-standing legacy, and I'm proud to have been a contestant. I've also been following recent shows like "Em Xinh Say Hi." If given the chance to participate, I'd be honored, as it would allow me to broaden my reach. I'm not afraid to collaborate in a team, having developed teamwork skills through my military training.

- How does your family support you financially and emotionally?

- I'm fortunate to have my family's support in all my decisions, even though none of them are in the arts. Since I started performing at the age of three, I've always invited them to my shows. They not only provide emotional support but also financial backing, giving me the resources to confidently navigate life. I may not have achieved everything I desire yet, but I believe fame is a matter of fate. I'll strive to gain recognition and appreciation for the music I pursue.

I'm about to release a series of songs about Hanoi, commemorating the 71st anniversary of the capital's liberation (10/10/1954-10/10/2025). The project includes many famous songs, which I've been working on and will release regularly on my YouTube channel. I want to express gratitude to the city that has nurtured me and my career. These classical songs, with their rich lyrics and melodies, capture the beauty of Hanoi's people and landscapes. I'll perform them with a touch of romance, prioritizing depth over excessive technique.

Le Minh Ngoc, 25, from Ha Tinh, studied at the Military University of Culture and Arts and is currently a final-year student at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. She works at the Military Music and Dance Theater, holding the rank of Lieutenant. Ngoc is a student of Meritorious Artist To Nga, who has been a mentor throughout her career.
