Directed by Michael Chaves, the film takes place 6 years after the third installment, The Devil Made Me Do It (2021). Based on a story from Pennsylvania (USA), the plot revolves around Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), investigating the mysterious case of the Smurl family. During an exorcism, they discover the malevolent force is not only tormenting the victims but also targeting their daughter, Judy.
In 1964, the Warrens had their first encounter with the demonic entity. While touching an antique mirror, Lorraine becomes possessed and goes into labor. This incident sets the stage for escalating events, including Judy's ability to see spirits.
Over two decades later, the mirror appears at the Smurl residence. Strange occurrences begin: unexplained noises, apparitions, and recurring nightmares. Judy experiences frequent hallucinations, forcing Ed and Lorraine, who had planned to retire due to age and health issues, to confront the demon residing within the mirror.
According to IGN, the film stays true to the spirit of The Conjuring franchise by emphasizing the importance of faith. The main characters don't rely solely on experience or exorcism techniques but find strength in religion and family. Lorraine’s unwavering faith helps her withstand the demon's torments, giving Ed strength in life-or-death moments. In the decisive moments, their love becomes a shield against the darkness.

Compared to previous installments, the film offers a more humanistic and heartwarming touch by delving into the Warrens’ family dynamics. Judy, with her psychic abilities, plays a crucial role for the first time, continuing the family’s legacy of fighting evil. Horror elements and chase sequences between the demon and the protagonists create a dark atmosphere.
The confrontation with the antique mirror is enhanced with layers of light and sound, increasing the suspense. The appearance of the ghost in the mirror and the final battle with the demon are praised for their visuals and special effects.
Instead of relying on jumpscares, the team uses camera angles and restrained sound design. Scenes with limited perspectives, close-ups of faces or body parts create a sense of claustrophobia, forcing viewers to focus on the characters’ fear. Dark spaces, blurry reflections in mirrors and TV screens, and glimpses of the supernatural force through specific angles heighten the tension. Background sounds like knocking, breathing, and whispers contribute to the sense of mystery.
The cast’s performances make the film memorable. There are several emotional scenes, such as Lorraine praying for her daughter and Ed fighting through a heart attack to protect his family.
Mia Tomlinson as Judy brings new energy to the series. Her portrayal conveys vulnerability and determination. The character appears as someone needing protection, yet possesses the courage to face the darkness. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga continue to deliver strong performances.

According to Variety, the film concludes Ed and Lorraine Warren's story while hinting at Judy's future. The project revitalizes familiar horror tropes, maintaining a tense atmosphere until the very end.
ScreenRant writer Tatiana Hullender commented, "The film is captivating, and I've never felt so worried for the Warrens’ safety. This film represents the best of the series."
However, Last Rites is not without its flaws. Critics point out the lengthy script, which takes time to build up to the climax. According to the Guardian, some of the demonic scenes are repetitive and lack surprise. The Smurl family members lack psychological depth. The pacing doesn't deliver the necessary explosive and decisive moments, opting for a safe conclusion.
The Conjuring Universe began in 2013 after the success of The Conjuring, directed by James Wan. The main storyline focuses on the Warrens’ investigations, while spin-offs explore supernatural entities like Annabelle and Valak. The series has released 9 films, including four main The Conjuring films and 5 spin-offs, grossing over $2.6 billion worldwide, according to The Numbers.
