The 'Jaws' cast 50 years later

From Roy Scheider's passing to Richard Dreyfuss's enduring career, the cast of the iconic thriller "Jaws" has seen significant changes in the 50 years since its release.

Carl Gottlieb was both co-writer and actor in "Jaws," portraying reporter Harry Meadows, who covers the shark attacks on Amity Island. He went on to write the screenplays for "Jaws 2" and "Jaws 3-D" and also directed and acted in "The Jerk" (1979) and "Clueless" (1995). Photo: Universal Pictures

Released in 1975, Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" is considered a cornerstone of the thriller genre, its music and imagery indelibly etched into popular culture. Set in the town of Amity Island, USA, the film follows Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), oceanographer Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) as they team up to eliminate a great white shark terrorizing the local beach.

The film quickly became the highest-grossing movie of its time and won three Academy Awards: Best Film Editing, Best Original Dramatic Score, and Best Sound. The Washington Post hailed "Jaws" as "one of the most terrifying movies ever made". Video: Universal Pictures

Peter Benchley authored the 1974 novel "Jaws," which was adapted into the film. He co-wrote the screenplay with Gottlieb and made a cameo appearance as a reporter. After "Jaws," Benchley continued his writing and producing career with films like "The Deep" (1976), "The Island" (1979), "Beast" (1991), and "White Shark" (1994). Steven Spielberg, 79, is the acclaimed Hollywood director and producer who gained international recognition after the resounding success of "Jaws" (1975), the film credited with launching the concept of the "summer blockbuster".

Spielberg is a two-time Academy Award winner for Best Director for "Schindler's List" (1993) and "Saving Private Ryan" (1998). He has also received four Golden Globe Awards and two BAFTA awards. Spielberg has been married to former actress Kate Capshaw, 72, for 34 years. The couple wed in 1991 and have three children together, along with two adopted children and two children each from previous relationships. According to SCMP, Spielberg is also the godfather of actresses Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow. Photo: THA/Film Magic

Richard Dreyfuss, 78, played oceanographer Matt Hooper in "Jaws," a role that catapulted him to fame in the 1970s. His intelligent and enthusiastic character arrives on Amity Island to help investigate the shark attacks plaguing the community. Dreyfuss won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in "The Goodbye Girl" (1977) at the age of 31. Over the past 50 years, Dreyfuss has maintained a connection with the "Jaws" fan community and attended the play "The Shark Is Broken"—a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the classic film—in 10/2023. According to the New York Post on 13/7, he announced from his hospital bed that he would be unable to attend the film's 50th-anniversary celebration in Florida due to bronchitis. From 1983 to 1995, he was married to screenwriter Jeramie Rain, with whom he has three children. In 2006, Dreyfuss married Svetlana Erokhin. Photo: Universal Pictures/IMDb

Roy Scheider, who played Police Chief Martin Brody, portrayed a man torn between his duty and his personal fears. Beyond this iconic role, Scheider appeared in films such as "The French Connection" (1971), "All That Jazz" (1979), "The Rainmaker" (1997), and "The Punisher" (2004). He received two Oscar nominations, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. Scheider was married to Cynthia Bebout from 1962 to 1986 and had one daughter with her. He married actress Brenda Siemer in 1989, and they had two children. In 2004, Scheider was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 6/2005. Robert Shaw, who portrayed the grizzled shark hunter Quint, embodied courage in the film. He died of a heart attack on 28/8/1978 at the age of 51, three years after the film's release. Before "Jaws," Shaw was known for roles in "From Russia with Love" (1963), "The Sting" (1973), "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974), and "Robin and Marian" (1976). He received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal of King Henry VIII in "A Man for All Seasons" (1966). Shaw was married three times and had 10 children, including two adopted children. He spent his final years in Ireland, struggling with alcoholism. Photo: Universal Pictures

Lorraine Gary, 88, played Ellen Brody, the wife of Chief Brody. Her character provided crucial emotional support to her husband as he faced pressure from the community and the looming threat of the shark. After "Jaws," Gary appeared in a few projects, including "Car Wash" (1976) and "1941" (1979), also directed by Spielberg, before largely retiring from acting. She briefly reprised her role as Ellen in "Jaws: The Revenge" in 1987. She married Sidney Sheinberg, the former president of Universal Pictures, in 1956, and they have two sons. Murray Hamilton played Mayor Larry Vaughn, who attempted to cover up the shark attacks to protect the island's tourist revenue. His stubbornness and indecisiveness exacerbated the crisis. Hamilton was a stage actor before transitioning to film. After the success of "Jaws," he reprised his role as the mayor in "Jaws 2" (1978) and appeared alongside Gary in "1941" (1979). He was slated to appear in "Jaws: The Revenge" but died of lung cancer in 1986 at age 63, before filming began. He married singer Terri DeMarco, a member of The DeMarco Sisters, in 1953, and they had one son. Photo: Universal Pictures/TMDB

Susan Backlinie played Chrissie Watkins, the shark's first victim in the film. She was also a stuntwoman, with credits including "Day of the Animals" (1977), "The Great Muppet Caper" (1981), and "Terror in the Aisles" (1984). According to The Palm Beach Post, she retired from acting in the mid-1980s and became an accountant. An avid diver, she even swam with sharks off the coast of Australia. Backlinie was married twice and had one daughter. She died of a heart attack in 5/2024 at the age of 78. Photo: Universal Pictures/NME

The role of Deputy Leonard Hendricks marked the beginning of Jeffrey Kramer's acting career. He portrayed the character with a down-to-earth quality. After "Jaws," he appeared in films such as "Hollywood Boulevard" (1976), "Halloween II" (1981), and "The Burbs" (1989). In the 1990s, Kramer transitioned to television production, working on series like "Chicago Hope" (1994), "The Practice" (1997-1999), and "Armed & Famous" (2007). Photo: Universal Pictures/NME

Lee Fierro, whose real name was Elizabeth Lee Beers, played Mrs. Kintner, the woman who slaps Chief Brody after her son's death. The scene remains memorable years later and is frequently shared on YouTube. She reprised the role in "Jaws: The Revenge." Before appearing in Spielberg's film, Fierro was a fixture on Martha's Vineyard, the island where "Jaws" was filmed, working as a drama teacher and artistic director of the Island Theatre Workshop. She had four children with her first husband, actor Marvin Stephens, and another child with her second husband, Bernard Fierro. She died in 2020 at age 91 in Ohio, USA, from Covid-19.
