According to HK01, the actress's daughter announced on 31/8 that Lai Suen passed away on 28/8. The family did not disclose any details about her health leading up to her death.
Lai Suen was born in 1931. Her father, Lai Man-Wai, is known as the "Father of Hong Kong Cinema". He established the first film company in Hong Kong, producing films and training actors. Many members of Lai Suen's family are involved in the film industry, including her niece Gigi Lai.

Lai Suen began her acting career in the late 1940s, appearing in hundreds of films and television shows. In the 1970s, she starred in "The Great Kindness," "The Legendary Fok," and "Chan Chin."
From the 1980s, Lai Suen appeared in a number of TVB productions, including "The Greed of Man," "The Lonely Hunter," "File of Justice," "The Art of Kung Fu," "A Kindred Spirit," "Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils" (1997) (as Empress Dowager Xiao), "The Duke of Mount Deer" (1998) (as Madam Zheng), "At the Threshold of an Era," "Heart of Greed," and "Forensic Heroes." Her final role was in "Only You" (2011).

According to Zaobao, while Lai Suen mostly played supporting roles, her characters left a lasting impression on many fans. She portrayed a wide range of characters, from good to evil and from impoverished to wealthy.

In 2023, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild. Due to mobility issues and reliance on a wheelchair, she was unable to attend the ceremony in person. She married her first love, Gao Hong, in 1951, and the couple had three children.
