The state of reading in Vietnam is often discussed in a somber tone: slow book sales, sparse libraries, and young people perceived as "lazy readers." Social media, short videos, and personalized algorithms accelerate human interaction, making patience with a book a luxury.
However, attributing a decline in reading culture solely to technological and societal advancements might be premature. In various corners, many individuals continue to maintain their passion for books in their own ways.
You might observe people cherishing books on flights, in library corners, on school grounds, or at cafes. For centuries, books have remained a vital source of knowledge, enriching the intellect, soul, and emotions of humanity.
While modern society offers thousands of short videos daily, books provide readers with serenity for self-reflection and a connection to the world. This is how people link the past, present, and future, not through screen touches, but through genuine emotional resonance and keenness of thought.
As VnExpress approaches its 25th anniversary (26/2/2001-26/2/2025), it continues its commitment beyond news delivery. The newspaper's culture is rooted in a responsibility to serve society, driven by the belief that knowledge shared becomes strength.
In commemoration of its 25th anniversary, VnExpress is launching an initiative to establish 25 libraries for 25 schools that face challenges in accessing reading culture.
From late January to 20/3, all VnExpress staff will form 25 teams to visit schools, libraries, and disadvantaged areas to hand-deliver books. Additionally, the teams will design reading rooms and organize workshops to enhance life skills for children.
To extend these meaningful stories, VnExpress invites readers to submit essays reflecting on "The book I love." We encourage you to share your personal connection with these works. Perhaps it was a book you read by an oil lamp in a rural village of yesteryear, or pages that helped you navigate through unstable, difficult times. It could also be a companion book you always carry, a part of your memories, serving as a guide through life.
Readers of all ages can submit an unlimited number of articles to giaitri.vnexpress@gmail.com. The submission period is from 12/2 to 15/3. Each article should not exceed 1,500 words and must be original, never before published on any media platform or social network. Submissions accompanied by images (of the book or the reader with the book) are encouraged. Authors are responsible for the copyright of their content and images.
Inspiring articles will be selected for publication in the Books section of VnExpress without royalties. Each week, the organizing committee will choose two articles with strong reader engagement (views and comments) to award gifts to their authors.
We hope that the articles shared by readers will awaken memories, connect thoughts, and bring together kindred spirits amidst the bustle of today's world.
