Tabi shoes, often dubbed "pig hoof" shoes, are a popular trend embraced by young people for the past two years. The design features a split toe, divided into two parts: one for the big toe and the other for the remaining toes.

Their predecessors were Japanese split-toe socks from the 15th century, later evolving into Jika-tabi shoes with soles made of leather, straw, or cotton, used for labor. According to W, the Japanese believe that the split-toe design impacts acupressure points in the feet, promoting balance and mental clarity. In 1922, brothers Tokujiro Ishibashi and Shojiro Ishibashi, founders of the Bridgestone tire company, created rubber soles for Jika-tabi. Today, some construction workers in Japan still wear these shoes.

In 1988, designer Martin Margiela, founder of Maison Margiela, introduced Tabi into the fashion world. The avant-garde Tabi shoes became a signature associated with the French fashion house. The split-toe detail, divided into two parts, led people to call them "pig hoof" shoes.

When Martin Margiela left the fashion world in 2009, the design gradually faded into obscurity until John Galliano became creative director in 2014. Inheriting the legacy, Galliano updated Tabi "pig hoof" shoes with a unisex style, gaining widespread acceptance in recent years.

Following this craze, local shoe brands in China, Vietnam, and Thailand mass-produced numerous modified versions, including slingback shoes, ankle boots, and high-heeled sandals. A pair of these "pig hoof" shoes costs from 400.000 VND upwards, depending on the material.

According to Elle, Tabi shoes possess many elements suitable for today's youth preferences. At a time when simple white sneakers have become common, Gen Z tends to seek out unconventional, unique items. These designs offer high recognition, are not confused with other shoe lines, and affirm a unique aesthetic.

Tabi are also popular due to their unisex appeal, suitable for both men and women. According to Vogue, "pig hoof" shoes are a perfect fit for the "quiet luxury" style, yet still offer a distinct highlight.

Among the styles, the ballet flat and Mary Jane "pig hoof" versions are the most favored due to their versatility in pairing. The design is suitable for many clothing items, such as: tank tops, shirts, bermuda shorts, midi skirts, tracksuits, and blazers. The Tabi loafer version is also a bestseller, suitable for young women and men pursuing an "understated rich" style.
