Mr. Hung frequently snored, experienced nasal congestion, interrupted sleep, and often woke up gasping for air. Despite sleeping for 7 hours, he remained fatigued and found it difficult to concentrate during the day. His recent weight gain exacerbated these symptoms.
He had undergone tonsillectomy and uvulopalatoplasty five years ago and was currently being treated for dyslipidemia, elevated liver enzymes, and high blood pressure. At the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, doctors informed Mr. Hung that his snoring and sleep apnea were linked to his weight. They advised prioritizing weight loss before considering surgical intervention. At that time, he weighed over 97 kg and was 1,72 m tall.
Doctor Le Ba Ngoc, Head of the General Internal Medicine Department at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, explained that being overweight or obese can worsen sleep apnea due to fat accumulation around the neck and upper airway, leading to airway narrowing. "Successful weight loss can resolve snoring and sleep apnea without surgical intervention," Doctor Ngoc said. However, sleep apnea often causes patients to feel fatigued and crave food, making weight loss challenging.

Doctors prescribed medication combined with a calorie-controlled diet and suitable physical exercise. After approximately 7 months, the patient's weight was reduced to 78 kg, and his snoring decreased. With a stable airway, Mr. Hung no longer needed the initially planned uvula removal surgery. He currently continues to maintain his diet and exercise regimen as advised, along with regular health check-ups.
Doctors recommend that individuals experiencing prolonged snoring, suspected sleep apnea, or rapid weight gain should seek early medical evaluation to determine the cause. Depending on the case, treatment may involve lifestyle changes, weight loss, medical therapy, or surgical intervention to improve sleep quality and overall health.
