6 daily habits for healthy eyes

Eating healthy, protecting your eyes from UV rays, and taking proper breaks from electronic screens can help maintain vision and reduce the risk of eye diseases.

The eyes work continuously, reading, working on computers, driving, and absorbing information from the surroundings. According to ophthalmologists, adopting certain healthy habits can help maintain good vision, reduce eye strain, and limit the risk of developing eye conditions as one ages.

Incorporate eye-healthy foods

A healthy diet is important for maintaining visual health. Vitamins A, C, E, zinc, along with antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, play a role in protecting the retina and reducing the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Foods to include in your diet are: dark leafy greens (spinach, kale), carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers. Salmon, tuna, other fatty fish rich in omega-3, eggs, nuts, and beans should also be part of your daily diet.

Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight

Physical activity benefits not only cardiovascular health but also eye health. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, a condition that can damage the blood vessels in the retina and affect vision.

Maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in regular exercise helps lower the risk of chronic diseases linked to vision impairment.

Give your eyes a break from electronic devices

Prolonged screen time can lead to dry eyes, eye strain, and blurred vision. Experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of screen use, look at an object about 20 feet (6 m) away for at least 20 seconds. Additionally, blink more frequently when working on a computer to keep the eye surface naturally lubricated and reduce dryness and irritation.

Wear sunglasses outdoors

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye damage. When outdoors, even on cloudy days, choose sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays.

Do not smoke

Smoking increases the risk of eye diseases, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. It can also damage the blood vessels that nourish the eyes, affecting visual function. Quitting smoking benefits not only the lungs and heart but also helps protect long-term vision.

Keep eyes clean and use contact lenses correctly

Bacteria and viruses can enter the eyes through unwashed hands or improperly cleaned contact lenses. Therefore, wash your hands before touching your eyes, and clean and replace contact lenses according to your doctor's or the manufacturer's instructions. Good hygiene helps reduce the risk of conjunctivitis and other eye infections.
