6 eye-damaging habits

Excessive screen time and self-medicating with eye drops are habits that can weaken eyesight over time.

Some everyday habits can unintentionally strain and weaken our eyes. Many people are unaware of these habits until vision problems develop. Eye conditions can hinder simple daily activities, but some can be prevented by avoiding unhealthy habits.

One such habit is excessive screen time. Digital eye strain, including dry eyes, irritation, and blurred vision, can stem from prolonged use of devices like computers, televisions, smartphones, and tablets. Blue light from screens can also disrupt sleep cycles. The 20-20-20 rule—taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away—can help reduce eye strain.

Another harmful habit is neglecting UV protection. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun damage eyes over time, increasing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays, especially on sunny days, is crucial for eye protection.

Ignoring eye pain symptoms is also detrimental. Common symptoms like headaches, chronic dry eyes, or eye strain can be early signs of eye problems. Ignoring these signs can lead to more serious eye conditions. Consulting an ophthalmologist is recommended if you experience persistent discomfort or vision changes. Early detection helps address issues before they worsen.

Self-medicating with eye drops is another risky habit. Many people buy over-the-counter eye drops to relieve irritation or discomfort. These drops sometimes contain steroids, which provide immediate relief but pose risks with prolonged use. Consulting a doctor before using eye drops or if irritation persists or worsens is advisable.

Neglecting blood sugar and blood pressure management also impacts eye health. Maintaining overall health supports good vision and disease prevention. High blood pressure and high blood sugar negatively affect the eyes. People with diabetes have a higher risk of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and eye infections. Carefully managing blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels is essential for vision health.

Not wearing prescribed glasses is another habit to avoid. Regular eye exams ensure good vision and early detection of eye diseases. Some conditions initially show no symptoms and can worsen without proper eyewear. Annual eye exams are recommended for early detection and treatment of potential issues.
