6 tips for cleaning living spaces to prevent respiratory illnesses

Regularly washing bed linens, carpets, and cleaning bathrooms and kitchen shelves helps eliminate dust and can reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses.

Using a damp cloth is key to effective cleaning. Many people make the mistake of using tools that disperse dust into the air, such as feather dusters or dry mops, which only cause dust particles to float and quickly resettle on surfaces. Instead, use a damp microfiber cloth or a wet mop to capture dust more effectively. When cleaning, open windows for ventilation and use a ventilation fan to improve air circulation. Regularly clean kitchen appliances like stoves, ovens, microwaves, and refrigerators to remove grease, stains, and food residue.

Cleaning bed linens and fabric items is crucial. Carpets, curtains, and upholstered furniture are prone to collecting dust, which can become an asthma trigger. Wash bed linens and carpets weekly to limit dust accumulation. Clutter also contributes to dust buildup. Store unused items in sealed containers to maintain a tidy, airy, and cleaner living space.

Consider using natural cleaning products. A simple mixture of water, vinegar, and a few drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus or lavender, can create an effective natural household cleaner. Spray this solution onto wooden surfaces and doors before wiping to clean and leave a fresh, subtle scent.

Don't forget to clean hidden corners of your home. Areas like behind the refrigerator, under beds, or on top of cabinets often accumulate dust over time. Regularly cleaning these overlooked spots can limit the spread of allergens as air circulates throughout your home. Using appropriate vacuum attachments makes cleaning easier and more effective, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

Pay attention to fans and air conditioning vents. Ceiling fans, air conditioners, and ventilation vents are often overlooked during cleaning, yet they accumulate significant dust. Wiping fan blades and cleaning air conditioner filters can prevent allergens from spreading throughout your home.

Thoroughly clean your bathroom. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting bathroom fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, and bathtubs can prevent the buildup of soap scum and mold. Use a diluted cleaning solution for effective cleaning. Always use an exhaust fan or open a window during and after showering to allow moisture to escape. Personal hygiene products like toothbrushes, razors, and loofahs should be stored in a dry, clean place to avoid bacterial contamination. Toothbrushes should be replaced regularly, and bath towels, bath mats, and shower curtains need frequent washing to limit the growth of bacteria and mold.
