A 15-minute workout for strength from the World's Strongest Man

World champion Mitchell Hooper's 15-minute workout method helps busy individuals optimize muscle strength with minimal effort.

For most people, lifting a barbell weighing over 450 kg seems like a scene from a cartoon, not a real-life gym session. However, this is the daily routine for Mitchell Hooper, the reigning World's Strongest Man champion.

Hooper first claimed this prestigious title in 2023 and successfully defended his crown this year. This is the highest honor in the strongman world, a sport focused on moving enormous and often oddly shaped objects, ranging from large stones and logs to even trucks.

As a master of science in physical physiology, Hooper asserts that ordinary people do not need to train like a strongman athlete. However, mastering similar exercises can effectively boost both strength and muscles while requiring less time at the gym.

"If you want to set a deadlift record, you have to calculate every small detail because it is a real scientific endeavor. But in reality, very few people have this goal. Most just want to go to the gym, put in the least effort, but get the highest results to continue their busy daily lives", the Canadian champion shared, as quoted by Business Insider.

Whether the objective is to carry groceries from the supermarket to the car or to lift an entire car for a sports competition, the basic principles of movement remain identical. The strongman discipline is based on fundamental human movement patterns, including: pushing, pulling, carrying, squatting, hip hinging, and overhead pressing. "These core movement patterns are what anyone should use as the foundation for their training regimen, whether an 80-year-old grandmother or a 15-year-old athlete, because they are essential for maintaining an active and holistic life", he explained.

According to the world champion, as long as sufficient challenge is created for the muscles in each type of movement, the choice between resistance machines or free weights is not crucial. "If you feel more comfortable with machines, stick with them; if you want to find pride in your best bench press, pursue that", Hooper said.

For a time-optimized workout, he advises selecting one exercise from each group that can simultaneously engage multiple muscle groups. Then, perform one heavy set with a maximum of 25 repetitions until the muscles reach or approach failure, meaning no more lifts can be completed with proper form. Next, repeat this process with two to three other exercises from the remaining movement groups. In this way, the entire body can be trained in approximately 15 minutes, including a five-minute warm-up.

Hooper stated that the essence of building strength is to create challenges that stimulate muscle adaptation. Therefore, a heavy set with high concentration will yield superior results compared to a long but superficial, distracted workout.

"If this method is applied, trainees will progress faster than 95% of people who go to the gym daily just to train out of habit or obligation. By simplifying the process, prioritizing multi-joint exercise machines, and training to exhaustion, individuals will certainly achieve optimal physical fitness", he affirmed.
