Master of Science, Doctor of Medicine, Level II Specialist Tran Thai Son, from the Department of General Surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, observed a uniform, slightly raised lesion approximately 1 cm in diameter on the patient's nasal bridge. It showed no signs of ulceration, itching, or pain. A pathological examination confirmed nodular basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
According to doctor Son, Ms. Kim's tumor had grown progressively, causing discomfort and aesthetic concerns. Further progression of the tumor could necessitate more invasive surgery and complex reconstruction. The doctor therefore recommended Mohs surgery to eradicate the cancer, while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible and maintaining Ms. Kim's facial aesthetics.
"This method is currently the gold standard for treating basal cell carcinoma, offering less invasiveness than conventional tumor removal surgery and promoting faster patient recovery", doctor Son explained.
The patient underwent endotracheal anesthesia. The tumor, along with a portion of the surrounding tissue, was surgically removed for immediate biopsy. The biopsy revealed the presence of cancer cells, prompting the doctor to remove additional small portions of surrounding tissue. This process was repeated until the entire margin was free of cancer cells. Unlike traditional tumor removal, which involves a single excision, Mohs surgery demands complete tumor removal while precisely preserving the patient's facial skin.

After confirming the absence of cancer cells, the doctor used a local skin flap to cover and reconstruct Ms. Kim's nasal bridge, carefully placing sutures along natural skin tension lines and facial wrinkles to conceal scars. Post-surgery, the patient recovered well, was discharged after three days, and returned for a follow-up appointment after two weeks.
To prevent skin cancer, doctors advise everyone to limit sun exposure, especially during midday and early afternoon. A balanced, healthy diet contributes to boosting immunity and preventing cancer.
Older adults should undergo annual health check-ups and cancer screenings as recommended by their doctors. If any unusual skin changes are observed, patients should seek medical examination and timely treatment.
