A husband's 25-year vigil: preventing bedsores for his paralyzed wife

For a quarter-century, a man in Ha Nam has diligently stayed awake every night, turning and massaging his wife, paralyzed from a spinal cord injury, to help her maintain a normal life.

A report broadcast by Ha Nam Television on 10/8 highlighted the tragic incident in 2001 when Jia suffered an accident, leading to severe injury and paralysis from the chest down. From that moment, her husband, Li Junliang, then 37 years old, became her sole support.

Li simultaneously cared for his wife and single-handedly raised their two children, then 13 and 10 years old. In the early years, he would turn his wife every two hours to prevent bedsores from prolonged lying. Later, he adjusted the interval between turns to four hours, including throughout the night.

Every day, Li carries his wife to her wheelchair, taking her outside to bask in the sun and breathe fresh air, alleviating confinement. Daily, he consistently massages his wife's limbs to minimize muscle atrophy. To date, their children have grown up and started their own families. The walls of Li's home are still adorned with academic awards from his two children's school days, reflecting the meticulous upbringing and love he dedicated to his family.

"My husband works very hard; he takes care of everything in our home with great diligence," Jia said. "His hair has turned completely white, while most of mine is still dark. Junliang, thank you for taking care of me for the past 25 years."

Responding to his wife's affection, Li asserted that his actions were simply fulfilling his wedding vows: "This family is only complete with you. No matter how difficult or tiring the road ahead, I will continue to care for you for another 25, 35, or 45 years."

According to medical experts, Li's consistent turning of his wife every two to four hours daily is not just an act of love but also an important medical measure to prevent complications in bedridden patients. When lying in one position for extended periods, continuous pressure on the skin and soft tissues in bony areas like the sacrum and ribs can cut off local blood circulation, leading to tissue necrosis – a dangerous, difficult-to-treat complication. Daily limb massages help stimulate circulation, reducing the risk of muscle atrophy and joint stiffness, which is crucial for maintaining a basic quality of life.

Beyond the physiological benefits, the husband's diligent and unwavering care creates a stable psychological environment, reducing stress, anxiety, and feelings of abandonment – factors that directly impact the immune system and the pace of recovery. Bedridden patients lacking emotional support often fall into severe depression, affecting their will to live and even leading to psychological illnesses.

Li shared that his wife had endured enough hardship giving birth to their two children. Now that she faced adversity, he could not abandon his life partner. Witnessing the couple's devotion, neighbors expressed their admiration. Many villagers praised him as an exceptional husband and father, noting that few men possess the patience and courage to persistently care for a bedridden wife for so many years.
