Can people with ankylosing spondylitis drink carbonated beverages?

I heard that patients with ankylosing spondylitis should not drink carbonated beverages. Is this true, and why? (Trung Thanh, Tay Ninh province)

Answer:

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease characterized by lesions in the sacroiliac joints, spine, limb joints, and even entheses (where tendons attach to bone). Beyond joint stiffness and impaired mobility, ankylosing spondylitis also increases bone mineral loss, making patients prone to osteoporosis and raising the risk of pathological fractures.

Individuals with ankylosing spondylitis need to limit certain foods, including carbonated beverages. Phosphoric acid is an essential component in carbonated drinks, creating a slight acidity and increasing product stability. Consuming large amounts of phosphoric acid can unbalance the calcium and phosphorus ratio in the blood. High phosphorus levels can cause the body to draw calcium from bones to rebalance, leading to bone demineralization and weakening.

Carbonated drinks also contain refined sugar (especially high-fructose corn syrup) which increases blood insulin. This reduces osteoblast activity, increases osteoclast activity, accelerates bone loss, and increases the risk of osteoporosis. Refined sugar can also increase inflammatory reactions, worsening disease symptoms.

If you have been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, you should minimize drinking carbonated beverages or other sugary and alcoholic drinks. Instead, drink plenty of plain water to avoid increasing inflammatory reactions and protect your musculoskeletal system. Green tea, unsweetened or low-sugar fruit and vegetable juices are also good choices as they contain many vitamins, have anti-inflammatory effects, balance electrolytes, and protect bone tissue.

Patients should visit the hospital for regular check-ups or immediately upon detecting unusual signs to receive treatment from a doctor if necessary.
