Common refrigerator mistakes that spoil eggs quickly

Removing the carton and storing eggs on the refrigerator door makes them prone to absorbing moisture, odors, and bacteria, reducing their freshness.

Many people, after purchasing eggs, often remove all external packaging and arrange the eggs on the designated tray inside the refrigerator door. However, this seemingly convenient habit can negatively affect the quality of egg storage.

Nutrition expert Chang Yu-hsi from Taiwan, China, advises that upon bringing eggs home, it is best to keep them in their original packaging before placing them in the refrigerator's cool compartment. This method helps reduce the risk of eggs absorbing strange odors and surrounding moisture.

Expert Chang Yu-hsi explains that the surface of an eggshell contains a large number of tiny pores, which easily absorb odors and humidity from inside the refrigerator. Without the protective outer carton, eggs directly contact the refrigerator environment and can easily pick up smells from other foods. Therefore, storing eggs in their original packaging in the refrigerator is the most suitable method.

Takano Masanori, a chicken farmer from Japan, previously shared his egg storage methods on the television program "Chiko-chan ni Shikarareru!". He pointed out that most egg trays are designed for the refrigerator door, a location frequently exposed to room temperature fluctuations each time the door is opened and closed. This constant temperature change makes it an unsuitable place for egg storage.

Takano Masanori further explained that an egg's surface has tens of thousands of pores. When the temperature changes abruptly, causing moisture or tiny water droplets to form on the shell's surface, the risk of microorganisms adhering and penetrating inside increases. This directly impacts the egg's quality and freshness. He therefore recommends storing eggs, along with their carton, in the refrigerator's cool compartment, which also helps prevent them from absorbing odors from other foods.

Additionally, the position of the eggs matters. Takano Masanori suggests that when storing eggs, it is best to place them with the "pointed end down and the blunt end up". This is because the egg's air sac is located at the blunt end; keeping the air sac facing upwards helps maintain the egg's quality and freshness for a longer period.
