Japanese mother loses 16 kg by weighing and measuring every meal

At 53, a Japanese woman weighing 65 kg lost 16 kg through precise meal portioning, becoming a television model.

Kumiko was accepted as a model for television shopping programs after reducing her weight from 65 kg to 49 kg. For the past two years, the mother of two successfully controlled her weight by precisely measuring daily calorie and food intake.

Before stepping onto the commercial stage, the 1.56 m tall woman maintained a weight of 50-52 kg to prevent sagging skin or wrinkles. Shedding 16 kg of excess fat eliminated her chronic shoulder and neck pain, allowed her to wake up refreshed daily, and reduced her thigh circumference from 52 cm to 44 cm.

Kumiko experienced uncontrolled weight gain while caring for her young family. When her second son started first grade, she began hybrid cycling 3-5 times a week. This helped the mother lose an initial 5 kg before her progress stalled. Following advice from friends, she shifted her focus to diet control. She initially gave up after two months of diligently consulting nutrition tables and manually calculating calories. A turning point came when she installed a nutrition management app on her phone.

The software automatically calculates energy intake by photo-scanning meals or barcode-scanning packaging. The app also compares calorie intake with energy expenditure during exercise, recommending personalized menus based on individual body types. This digital data helped her eat on time, precisely control portions, and eliminate snacking.

Kumiko also abandoned carbohydrate restriction. Her previous habit of avoiding rice inadvertently led her to consume many fatty side dishes. She reintroduced white rice into her main meals in moderate portions. To maintain her diet without affecting her children's nutrition, she pre-cooked her meals on weekends.

When eating fast food or ramen out with her children, the mother, in her 50s, balanced her energy intake. She bought individual hamburgers instead of combo meals; swapped french fries for chicken nuggets to increase protein; and chose water or unsweetened tea over soft drinks. With ramen, she transferred some noodles to her children's bowls, avoided the fatty film, and did not drink the broth. Based on the weekly calorie summary chart on her phone, she proactively ate lighter meals afterward to compensate.

Alongside managing her diet, she used a kitchen scale to measure food in grams, weighed herself every morning, and used a tape measure weekly for her chest, waist, hips, upper arms, and thighs.

Due to her limited time, she chose to walk on her home balcony instead of going to a gym. The covered space allowed her to exercise regardless of weather, while also easily watching her young children. She combined shoulder rotations and waist twists while walking to increase energy expenditure.
