Master. Doctor Nguyen Hoai Vu, from the Cardiology Department at Tam Anh Cau Giay General Clinic, states that dizziness and lightheadedness are common symptoms that can affect people of all ages. While often attributed to benign causes like fatigue, lack of sleep, nutritional deficiencies, or stress, these symptoms can also be a warning sign of underlying health conditions.
Doctor Vu highlights several specific cardiovascular diseases that can cause symptoms of dizziness and lightheadedness.
Arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat, often presents with sudden dizziness. This may be accompanied by palpitations, a rapid or uneven heart rate, or skipped beats. In severe instances, an overly fast or slow heart rate can lead to lightheadedness and fainting.
Coronary artery disease often manifests symptoms during physical exertion, such as brisk walking or climbing stairs. Patients might experience dizziness alongside chest pain, tightness, or a heavy sensation in the chest.

Heart failure can lead to persistent fatigue, shortness of breath during physical activity or when lying flat, and dizziness when changing positions or walking.
Blood pressure disorders, particularly hypotension (low blood pressure) or erratic fluctuations, can also cause these symptoms. Many individuals report feeling dizzy or experiencing a temporary blurring of vision upon standing, as their body struggles to quickly regulate blood flow to the brain.
Untreated, these conditions can escalate, heightening the risk of fainting and fall-related injuries. They can also lead to severe events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, or advanced heart failure.
Doctor Vu advises against complacency for anyone experiencing recurrent, prolonged, or worsening dizziness and lightheadedness, especially if symptoms appear without changes in posture. Individuals with pre-existing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia should seek medical evaluation to rule out potential cardiovascular risks.
