Despite folk beliefs suggesting Vietnamese coriander (rau ram) has a heating property that could reduce libido and affect male fertility if consumed in large quantities, there are currently no reliable clinical studies proving that it lowers testosterone, causes erectile dysfunction, or diminishes sperm quality in men.
Vietnamese coriander is a common herb often served with balut eggs, salads, and other dishes. Men consuming typical amounts of this herb in their meals do not need to avoid it out of concern for their sexual function.
In reality, male sexual health is influenced by many factors, including age, overall health, hormones, psychological well-being, and lifestyle. Attributing decreased libido or sexual dysfunction solely to an herb can lead men to overlook underlying causes that require diagnosis and treatment.
Diet and daily habits play a crucial role in overall health, including sexual function and fertility. Conversely, a prolonged unhealthy lifestyle can increase the risk of sexual health issues. Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and stimulant use can negatively affect blood vessels, hormones, and sperm quality. Furthermore, an unbalanced diet, with frequent consumption of energy-dense, high-saturated fat, and fried foods, can increase the risk of being overweight, obesity, and metabolic disorders. These conditions are linked to lower testosterone levels and various sexual function problems.
Staying up late, sleep deprivation, lack of physical activity, and prolonged stress can also affect sexual desire, mood, and hormonal health. However, the degree of impact varies among individuals, depending on their health status and other accompanying factors.
To maintain sexual function and reproductive health, men should adopt a diverse, balanced diet that provides sufficient protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients. It is advisable to increase intake of green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and healthy protein sources, while also engaging in regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep, and managing weight. If experiencing a prolonged decrease in libido, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, or suspected decline in fertility, men should seek examination at a specialized andrology clinic.
