Dementia is a term for a group of brain disorders that cause a decline in memory, thinking, reasoning, and the ability to perform daily activities. This group of conditions includes various types, with Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Parkinson's disease being the most common. Early manifestations can extend for decades, subtly altering brain function.
Difficulty recalling information is a common early sign. Persistently forgetting recent information, important dates, or repeating questions can signal cognitive decline that disrupts daily life. This condition often leads individuals to rely on family for tasks they previously managed independently.
Impaired problem-solving ability frequently appears. Individuals often struggle with multi-step tasks, switching between activities, or performing several tasks simultaneously. Those with Alzheimer's disease frequently show poor results in problem-solving tests, reaction time, and the ability to recall data from previous years.
Errors in judgment and financial oversights can emerge years before memory problems become noticeable. Signs include failing to pay bills, making risky financial decisions, or purchasing items unusual for daily habits.
Language problems are also an indicator. Individuals may pause mid-conversation, struggle to find words, or use incorrect words. This disruption makes communication difficult and causes emotional stress.
Mood changes can be an early symptom. Individuals may withdraw, lose interest in social activities, or experience prolonged low moods, sometimes appearing before cognitive symptoms. Manifestations such as mild depression can reflect early brain changes related to memory loss.
Changes in motor skills and balance are another potential sign. Minor motor changes, including slower walking, frequent stumbling, loss of balance, and reduced agility, are early signs of dementia.
Hearing loss, if untreated, can also be a warning. The onset of untreated hearing or vision problems, coupled with cognitive decline, can signal memory loss.
