The Eye Saigon Myopia Control Center, part of the Eye Saigon Hospital System, organized its first specialized ophthalmology refraction conference, focusing on evidence-based myopia control. The event, held in Ho Chi Minh City in late March, attracted many doctors and industry experts.
Representatives from the organizing committee emphasized that myopia is becoming a 21st-century threat. According to research by the International Myopia Institute, one-half of the world's population could be affected by 2050. Vietnam, in particular, has seen a rising rate of refractive errors among students.
Beyond vision impairment, myopia carries the risk of progressing into serious pathological conditions if not managed promptly. This situation necessitates the urgent development of control strategies based on scientific evidence and clinical data, rather than merely correcting vision.

In his opening remarks, Huynh Le Duc, general director of Saigon Medical Group, stated that myopia control requires a long-term approach, combining scientific foundations, clinical data, and standardized treatment practices. "Through this conference, we hope to create an academic forum for everyone to share experiences, update trends, and gradually build a suitable myopia control model in Vietnam," Duc said.
Following this, doctors and experts presented professional reports on various aspects of myopia control, from pathogenesis and ocular biometric changes to current treatment methods. Speakers applied scientific theories, linking them with clinical data to clarify the effectiveness of each method and its practical application.
Besides common methods such as myopia control spectacle lenses, Ortho-K, and atropine, the reports also addressed the concept of personalized treatment, progress monitoring, and optimizing efficacy for each patient. Most experts considered this a significant approach in modern ophthalmology.

Beyond knowledge updates, the conference also fostered academic exchange among units within the system. Doctors and optometrists shared clinical experiences, discussed real-world scenarios, and clarified various issues during the treatment process.
The organizing committee noted the increasing prominence of optometrists in practice, from examinations and progress monitoring to implementing myopia control solutions. Collaboration among specialties contributes to enhancing treatment efficacy and ensuring continuity in patient care.

Moving forward, Eye Saigon's leadership will continue to boost academic activities, aiming to improve the quality of vision care and myopia control for children, while collaborating with families and schools to protect school-age vision.
