Eye signs warning of vitamin B12 deficiency

Low levels of vitamin B12 in the body can cause dry and yellow eyes, along with uncontrollable eye twitching.

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient the body requires but cannot produce itself. It is found in animal products, fortified foods, and is available as oral supplements or injections.

Vitamin B12 plays several vital roles, including supporting nerve cell function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. Adults typically need about 2,4 mcg of B12 daily. While a vitamin B12 deficiency often impacts the nervous system, it can also lead to vision issues.

Dry eyes

A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to severe dry eyes and ocular discomfort. This deficiency can damage the corneal nerve layer. Oral vitamin B12 supplementation and artificial tears may alleviate dry eye symptoms.

Yellow eyes

Individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency often appear pale and may develop a yellowish tint to their skin and the whites of their eyes, a condition known as jaundice. This occurs because the body fails to produce enough red blood cells without adequate vitamin B12. A nutritionally balanced diet can help ensure sufficient vitamin B12 intake.

Optic nerve issues

Vitamin B12 deficiency can present with neuropsychiatric symptoms, even without concurrent anemia. This vitamin is vital for nerve cell myelination. A deficiency can diminish nerve impulses in the optic nerve, leading to weakened vision.

Uncontrolled eye twitching

Insufficient vitamin B12 impacts the nervous system, frequently resulting in peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord disease, and cognitive or behavioral symptoms. These neurological issues can also cause involuntary eye movements, such as twitching, which is a less common sign often improved with vitamin B12 supplementation.

Beyond these ocular manifestations, other common signs of B12 deficiency include: pale skin, fatigue, headaches, mouth soreness, digestive issues, irritability, mood swings, and depression. While consulting a doctor about supplements is advisable, individuals can also boost their B12 intake through foods such as: clams, beef, salmon, tuna, sardines, eggs, milk, and cheese.
