On 26/12/2024, a representative from Cam Khe Regional Medical Center reported the patient was admitted with dizziness, severe vomiting, and right upper abdominal pain. According to family members, she initially took three 500 mg paracetamol tablets for a headache. When the pain did not ease, she took 5 more, amounting to nearly a full blister pack. Upon discovery, her family immediately sought medical treatment.
Doctors diagnosed paracetamol overdose, leading to poisoning that, without prompt emergency care, could progressively worsen and become life-threatening. The medical team administered intensive treatment, including antidotes and intravenous fluids, following a specific protocol. After 5 days, the patient's condition stabilized.
Paracetamol is a widely used over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, contributing to a rapid increase in paracetamol poisoning rates. Doctor Nguyen Duy Long from the Emergency, Intensive Care, and Anti-poisoning Department noted it is a relatively safe drug. However, overdosing or even taking therapeutic doses can cause poisoning in patients who are malnourished, alcoholics, undergoing epilepsy treatment, using anti-tuberculosis drugs, or have liver disease.
Paracetamol poisoning commonly occurs in patients who use the drug for extended periods or combine multiple medications containing paracetamol for pain relief. If not detected and treated promptly, patients can experience severe complications: acute liver damage, liver failure, coagulation disorders, multi-organ failure, and in severe cases, death.
Doctor Long advises against self-medicating with pain relievers or fever reducers in excessive doses or for prolonged periods. Medication should only be used according to the correct dosage, intervals, and instructions from a pharmacist or healthcare professional. Additionally, avoid combining multiple medications containing the same active ingredient, paracetamol. Any unusual symptoms warrant immediate medical attention at a healthcare facility.
For children, parents should clearly explain that medicine should only be taken with adult consent. They must provide clear guidance on dosage and administration intervals, ensuring medication is taken under adult supervision. Store medicine safely to prevent confusion with other medications containing similar active ingredients.
