The Drug Administration of Vietnam has issued a nationwide recall for a batch of 0,9% sodium chloride eye drops manufactured by Pharmedic Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Materials Joint Stock Company. The product failed clarity standards due to the presence of visible sediment and suspended particles.
Doctor Nguyen Huy Hoang, from the Vietnam Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Association, stated that while the violation may not pose immediate danger, it is a significant concern. He emphasized that clarity is not merely a sensory factor but a crucial safety barrier for ophthalmic medications.
The 0,9% saline solution, commonly used for eye hygiene, must meet two critical criteria: sterility and complete transparency. If the solution contains foreign particles or impurities, users may experience symptoms such as irritation, stinging, redness, watery eyes, or temporary blurred vision. Continued use risks repeated corneal abrasions, which can eventually lead to dry eyes or corneal scarring.
In cases of bacterial contamination, bacteria can cause conjunctivitis, characterized by red eyes, excessive discharge, and swelling. More severely, it can lead to corneal ulcers, significantly impacting vision. Individuals who have recently undergone eye surgery, have existing corneal damage, or suffer from inflammatory eye conditions face a higher risk of severe progression and difficult treatment.
Furthermore, changes in salt concentration or degraded preservatives can cause eye irritation, pain, or swelling due to an imbalance in osmotic pressure.

Doctor Hoang advises users to habitually inspect products before use. A standard solution should be completely clear, colorless, free of suspended particles, haziness, or sediment. If the bottle appears cloudy, discolored, or has residue on the neck, discontinue use immediately.
Always check the packaging. Avoid using bottles that are dented, leaking, have a loose cap, or a dirty or moldy dropper tip. Pay close attention to the expiration date after opening.
Do not share a single bottle of saline solution among multiple family members. Additionally, avoid storing the product in hot, humid environments such as bathrooms, car trunks, or handbags for extended periods.
