Is drinking ginger tea in the morning good for gout patients?

I regularly drink ginger tea in the morning and recently discovered I have gout. Should I continue this habit? (Thanh Hung, TP HCM)

Gingerol, a primary compound found in ginger root, possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This compound can inhibit inflammation-causing enzymes in the body, helping to soothe swelling and pain and reduce the frequency of acute gout flare-ups. The natural minerals in ginger also support metabolic processes, contributing to a reduction in excess uric acid levels in the blood.

To prepare ginger tea, wash and thinly slice a few pieces of fresh ginger. Boil them with 300-500 ml of water for a few minutes, then drink while warm. It is advisable to avoid adding sugar, honey, or other sweeteners. After an overnight fast, uric acid levels in the blood can easily increase due to lack of hydration. Consuming additional sugar, particularly fructose, can further elevate uric acid levels and increase the risk of a gout attack.

Patients may also consider supplementing with natural bioactive compounds such as undenatured collagen type II, collagen peptide, chondroitin sulfate, along with turmeric extract and eggshell membrane. These ingredients help to inhibit inflammatory responses, protect the joint capsule, and stimulate cartilage regeneration, thereby alleviating pain.

It is important to understand that ginger tea serves only as a supportive measure. It cannot rapidly lower uric acid levels or replace medical treatments prescribed by a doctor for gout. Individuals diagnosed with hyperuricemia or gout should undergo regular check-ups for ongoing monitoring by a doctor. Do not arbitrarily discontinue uric acid-lowering medication or switch entirely to traditional remedies.

Ginger has a pungent taste and may irritate the digestive tract in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal conditions, such as stomach ulcers. Those taking anticoagulant medications or managing chronic underlying health conditions should consult their doctor before regular consumption.

Controlling blood uric acid levels is a long-term process that requires a combination of factors. If prescribed, you should take medication as directed by your doctor, adopt an appropriate diet, limit alcohol and sugary drinks, and maintain a healthy weight. The habit of drinking ginger tea in the morning can be incorporated as part of a healthy daily dietary regimen.
