Is fasting necessary during radiation therapy?

A patient was advised that fasting and consuming male papaya leaf water and false daisy (*co muc*) during radiation therapy would more effectively and quickly destroy cancer cells. Is this advice correct? (Thanh Minh, 44, Tay Ninh)

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that fasting during radiation therapy enhances the destruction of cancer cells. In fact, fasting during radiation therapy often results in weight loss, malnutrition, and a weakened immune system. This can leave patients fatigued, hinder their ability to complete the treatment regimen, and negatively impact treatment responsiveness.

No scientific research supports the claim that consuming male papaya leaf water, false daisy (*co muc*), or other folk herbal remedies can shrink tumors or boost radiation therapy efficacy. While these plants contain antioxidant compounds that may offer some health benefits, they do not treat cancer. Self-administering these herbal remedies poses risks, including liver damage, blood clotting disorders, and potential interactions with prescribed medications, which could reduce treatment effectiveness or increase toxicity.

Patients should adhere to their doctor's established cancer treatment protocol and maintain a complete, protein-rich diet to bolster their physical condition during radiation therapy. Before using any additional herbal remedies or supplements, patients must consult their treating physician to prevent unnecessary risks.
