Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tran, a First-Degree Specialist in Dermatology and Aesthetic Dermatology at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, explained that dark undereye circles stem from multiple mechanisms. Tu developed dark circles at age 12, likely due to a combination of genetic predisposition and increased pigmentation under the skin, exacerbated by lifestyle habits. While not the primary cause, prolonged sleep deprivation worsened his condition over time. This is why topical products were ineffective for Tu, according to Dr. Tran.
The doctor prescribed pico pro laser treatment for Tu, consisting of 6-8 sessions, spaced approximately one month apart. This technology utilizes ultra-short pulses that target and break down pigment clusters under the skin into tiny melanin particles. These particles are then gradually eliminated by the body's immune system.
Pico pro laser does not affect surrounding tissues, making it suitable for delicate and sensitive areas like the skin around the eyes. Simultaneously, the laser gently stimulates skin regeneration, improving skin tone evenness and overall quality over time.

During the treatment, Tu experienced only mild numbness around the eyes, with no pain and no need for downtime. After three sessions, his dark circles began to fade, and his face appeared brighter, with clear improvements after each subsequent session.
Dr. Tran stated that various factors cause dark undereye circles, such as increased melanin pigmentation or thin skin revealing blood vessels. Some cases are linked to structural issues in the eye area, such as deep-set eyes or prominent tear troughs. The most common scenario, like Tu's, involves a combination of several factors.

Patients must adhere to the prescribed treatment regimen, as effectiveness depends on the underlying cause. Cases involving structural factors, such as deep-set eyes, may require a combination of methods for optimal results. These could include micro-injections of Hyaluronic acid, brightening and rejuvenating injections for the eye area, or dermal fillers if there is significant hollowness or volume loss.
Furthermore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting adequate sleep, avoiding late nights, protecting the skin around the eyes with sunscreen and sunglasses, and ensuring proper nutrition are crucial for sustaining long-term results.
Individuals with persistent dark undereye circles should consult a doctor for diagnosis and to select the correct treatment method.
