On 18/7, a representative from Bac Ninh General Hospital No. 1 reported that the patient, trusting folk remedies that fish bile could cure ailments, provide nourishment, boost vitality, and relieve hangovers, consumed bile from his homegrown carp. After several days, he experienced severe poisoning, anuria, and full-body edema, leading to his hospitalization.
Lab results revealed severe liver and kidney damage. Following an emergency consultation, doctors diagnosed him with multi-organ failure, specifically acute anuric kidney failure and acute liver failure, caused by carp bile poisoning. He immediately underwent continuous emergency dialysis. His condition began to improve only on the 7th day of treatment.
According to doctors, the belief that consuming carp bile can cure eye pain, relieve hangovers, aid digestion, or provide nourishment lacks any scientific basis. Instead, this practice carries a serious risk of poisoning, potentially leading to acute liver failure, acute kidney failure, multi-organ failure, and death if not treated promptly.
Carp bile contains numerous toxins that directly attack vital organs, with the primary toxin being alcol steroid 27 C (5α Cyprinol), which predominantly damages the liver and kidneys. Within hours to several days after consumption, patients typically experience nausea, frequent vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and reduced or absent urine output. In severe cases, the condition can progress to acute kidney failure, liver failure, electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, and even multi-organ failure.

Currently, there is no specific antidote for carp bile poisoning. Doctors primarily provide intensive supportive care, including fluid replacement, correction of electrolyte imbalances, monitoring liver and kidney function, and dialysis as needed. Many cases require prolonged treatment, ranging from several days to several weeks, before kidney function recovers.
Doctors strongly advise against consuming fish bile in any form, whether raw, steeped in alcohol, or mixed with water. If any unusual symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, or reduced urine output appear after consuming fish bile, individuals should seek immediate medical attention.
