On the night of 25/7, Bai Chay Hospital in Quang Ninh, in coordination with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and leading hospitals, successfully completed the process of mobilizing, retrieving, and distributing multiple organs from a brain-dead donor.

The 19-year-old donor had been hospitalized with severe multiple injuries and a deep coma following a traffic accident. The brain damage was too extensive for recovery. After three independent evaluations, a professional council concluded the patient was brain-dead. The family then consented to donate their child's organs to save other patients.

Surgical teams worked through the night, maintaining resuscitation for the young man to ensure the quality of the donated organs. Following the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center's distribution plan, teams retrieved the heart, liver, and two kidneys from the donor. The lungs, however, were deemed unsuitable for transplantation.

The young man's heart was transported to Military Hospital 108 for a patient awaiting a transplant there. The liver was divided into two parts: the right lobe was transplanted to a patient at Military Hospital 108, while the left lobe went to a patient at National Children's Hospital, with professional coordination from Vinmec Hospital.

The two kidneys were distributed to Hue Central Hospital and Children's Hospital 2 (TP HCM) for patients on the national organ transplant waiting list.

Ultimately, through the noble act of the donor and his family, four donated organs provided a chance at renewed life for five patients.

This marks the first successful multi-organ retrieval from a brain-dead donor for Bai Chay Hospital. Previously, two other facilities in Quang Ninh had performed this procedure: Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital and Quang Ninh Provincial General Hospital.
