Doctor Vo Xuan Huy, from the Center for Urology - Nephrology - Andrology at Tam Anh General Clinic District 7, diagnosed Mr. Minh with a three-lobe enlarged prostate. Mr. Minh presented with several serious warning signs of the condition, including obstruction, irritation, and symptoms of a urinary tract infection. The disease had progressed to a severe stage of bladder outlet obstruction, where the bladder wall thickened and became rough from overworking to expel urine. Without immediate surgery, this could lead to urinary retention, kidney failure, infections, and bladder stone formation.
Mr. Minh was transferred to Tam Anh General Hospital Ho Chi Minh City for treatment using laser enucleation of the prostate. The medical team utilized a laser to completely separate each prostate lobe from its capsule, pushing them into the bladder. The laser's thermal energy coagulated blood vessels, significantly reducing bleeding and complications, and preserving the urethral sphincter.
According to Doctor Huy, this technique removes the maximum amount of fibrous tissue, leaving only the capsule, which results in a very low recurrence rate. It is particularly suitable for patients with significantly enlarged prostates, bladder outlet obstruction, and those who are elderly, like Mr. Minh.
Mr. Minh was discharged after three days, able to urinate easily with a strong stream, and no longer experienced abdominal distension. He will need to follow his doctor's instructions for bladder training.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition where the prostate gland grows excessively, compressing the urethra and obstructing urine flow from the bladder. Common causes include age, hormones, genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. If left untreated, BPH can lead to complications such as acute urinary retention, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and kidney failure.
Doctor Huy advises individuals experiencing urinary disorders not to self-medicate. Instead, they should consult a urology specialist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
