Rare disease forces "autumn in my heart" star to undergo four surgeries to save her arm

Once affectionately known as "the nation's little sister" by the public, Moon Geun-young had to halt her artistic career after doctors diagnosed her with a rare disease requiring emergency surgery.

On 16/4, producers of the show "You Quiz on the Block" released a preview for an upcoming episode on YouTube, featuring a radiant Moon Geun-young. The 39-year-old actress shared that she has fully recovered from her severe illness. According to Chosun, the star hopes to embark on a new chapter of her life, living more vibrantly.

The crisis struck the "nation's little sister" in 2/2017 while she was performing in the play "Romeo and Juliet". Intense, indescribable pain suddenly appeared in her right arm. Doctors warned that she had missed the critical treatment window, and tissue had begun to necrose.

The medical team performed four consecutive emergency surgeries to save the actress's arm. This incident compelled Moon Geun-young to cancel all her work commitments. However, she considered this time an opportunity to genuinely relax and rest.

Orthopedic specialist Shin Kyu-chul explained that compartment syndrome causes excruciating pain. Sufferers describe the sensation as if their body is tearing apart or burning. This condition occurs when pressure within muscle compartments rapidly increases, obstructing blood vessels and compressing nerves. The medical community considers this a life-or-death emergency, requiring doctors to intervene within 6 to 8 hours to prevent permanent tissue necrosis and avoid the risk of complete limb paralysis.

To save patients, doctors typically perform a fasciotomy to immediately relieve pressure. They must wait for the swelling to subside before closing the wound. This condition can be triggered by injury or by overly tight bandages or casts, which increase intracompartmental pressure. Medical experts advise individuals to immediately consult a doctor for examination and treatment if pain intensifies rather than subsides after a cast is applied.

Moon Geun Young made her mark in films such as "Autumn in My Heart", "My Little Bride", "Dancing with the Wind", and "Painter of the Wind". Joining the entertainment industry at a young age, the big-eyed actress impressed audiences with her realistic and emotional acting style. Currently, Moon Geun Young lives a private life, is not married, and remains free of scandals. She embodies the artist who, despite past fame, embraces a slower pace of life, prioritizing health and peace over public recognition.
