Ut's thyroid ultrasound at Tam Anh General Hospital revealed a 5x6x4 cm nodule in her left lobe. A needle biopsy confirmed it was malignant. The nodule's proximity to the thyroid surface posed a risk of outer capsule invasion, prompting doctors to opt for open surgery. They performed a 4 cm incision in her neck to ensure safety and complete cancer removal.

During surgery, an intraoperative frozen section biopsy confirmed the tumor remained localized and had not spread extensively. This allowed the surgical team to remove only the left thyroid lobe, preserving the patient's remaining thyroid function.

Doctors carefully separated the affected thyroid tissue from vital neck structures and cleared lymph nodes to prevent recurrence. They preserved the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands, helping the patient avoid complications like hoarseness or hand numbness from post-operative hypocalcemia.

Following surgery, Ut recovered well. She experienced minimal incision pain, resumed eating, and was discharged after 4 days without needing adjuvant treatment. She will not require thyroid hormone medication, as her remaining thyroid tissue is expected to compensate.

Doctor Hoai advises patients to attend scheduled follow-up appointments, monitor any unusual body changes, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These steps help prevent recurrence or the development of new lesions.

Doctor Hoai notes that while thyroid cancer is common in individuals aged 40-70, it is increasingly affecting younger demographics. Risk factors include environmental pollution and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Genetic factors also play a role. Therefore, individuals with a family history of thyroid cancer should proactively undergo check-ups and screenings as advised by a doctor. Early detection of abnormalities and timely intervention enhance treatment effectiveness.
