Yes, children should use sunscreen. Children have delicate skin, and their skin barrier is not as fully developed as adults, making them vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can cause skin darkening, sunburn, increase the risk of premature aging, and lead to long-term skin conditions. For children aged 6 months and older, sunscreen is an essential protective measure when outdoors.

For a 10-year-old who frequently goes outdoors during midday heat, sunscreen use is recommended. However, it should not be overused or applied incorrectly. Children should use physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these are less likely to cause irritation compared to chemical sunscreens.
Parents should choose sunscreen with an appropriate SPF for children, ranging from 30 to 50. Apply sunscreen approximately 15-20 minutes before sun exposure, ensuring adequate coverage on exposed areas such as the face, neck, arms, and legs. For children engaged in prolonged outdoor activities, swimming, or heavy sweating, reapplication is necessary every 2-3 hours. Combine sunscreen with other protective measures: wear wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, and limit sun exposure during peak hours (10h-16h).
After sun exposure, guide your child to cleanse their skin with cool water, using a mild facial cleanser if needed to remove sunscreen and dirt. Follow this with a light moisturizer to help restore the skin's protective barrier. If the skin shows signs of redness or burning, apply a cool compress or use a soothing skin product suitable for children. Ensure your child drinks enough water to replenish fluids lost due to the heat.
If a child has a history of sensitive skin or has previously experienced irritation from cosmetics, it is advisable to perform a patch test on a small skin area first or consult a doctor to select a safe product.
