Silent signs of stomach cancer

Persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, nausea after meals, difficulty swallowing, or prolonged fatigue can be easily overlooked indicators of stomach cancer.

Dr. Umut Sarpel, Chief of Surgical Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, US, states that early symptoms of stomach cancer are often vague and easily confused with common digestive issues. This frequently leads to diagnoses at advanced stages, impacting treatment outcomes.

Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort

According to the Times of India, one common sign of stomach cancer is a dull ache or discomfort in the upper abdomen. This symptom is often mistaken for bloating, indigestion, or typical stomach pain. Many individuals take medication or adjust their diet, yet the pain shows no significant improvement.

If abdominal pain persists for several weeks, recurs frequently, or comes with a loss of appetite, individuals should seek medical examination for a thorough check-up.

Unexplained weight loss

Unintended weight loss signals various serious conditions, including stomach cancer. Some people notice sudden weight loss without dieting or increased physical activity. This can occur because a tumor affects digestion, nutrient absorption, or causes early satiety, leading to reduced food intake. Weight loss accompanied by abdominal pain, fatigue, or frequent nausea warrants early investigation.

Nausea or vomiting after meals

Common causes like unsuitable food or digestive disorders can lead to nausea. However, if this symptom appears frequently, especially after meals, individuals should not dismiss it.

Stomach cancer can impair the digestive process, causing persistent nausea or recurrent vomiting. In advanced stages, a tumor might obstruct food passage through the stomach, leading to early fullness, bloating, or discomfort even after consuming small amounts of food.

Difficulty swallowing

Difficulty swallowing requires early attention, particularly if it progresses over time. Initially, individuals might only find it hard to swallow solid foods. Later, a choking sensation can occur even when drinking water or eating soft foods. This may indicate a tumor affecting the junction between the esophagus and the stomach. Anyone experiencing this symptom should seek medical examination as soon as possible.

Prolonged fatigue

Persistent exhaustion, even with adequate rest, can sometimes relate to serious conditions like stomach cancer. The disease can cause anemia due to silent bleeding in the digestive tract, leading to body weakness, lack of energy, and fatigue.

Dr. Umut Sarpel cautions that individuals experiencing such persistent or concurrent symptoms require attention rather than being carelessly dismissed.
