Skunk Vine with Egg: A Delicious Medicinal Dish for Digestive Health

Combining skunk vine with egg creates a tasty dish that supports the treatment of various digestive issues, notably colitis.

Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital - Campus 3, states that skunk vine, also known as "mo tam the", is a folk remedy for digestive ailments, particularly colitis.

In traditional oriental medicine, skunk vine is described as bitter-sweet and cool, possessing antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. Modern research supports these uses, identifying active compounds like alkaloids, tannins, and essential oils. These act as natural antibiotics, inhibiting harmful bacteria, reducing spasms, and promoting ulcer healing on the colon lining.

Pan-fried skunk vine with chicken egg is a classic medicinal dish for individuals experiencing spastic colon or diarrhea. To maximize its medicinal properties, the most common and effective preparation method involves finely chopping a handful of fresh skunk vine, mixing it thoroughly with chicken eggs, then pan-frying the mixture on a banana leaf or steaming it, rather than deep-frying with excessive oil.

For preparation, combine approximately 30-50 g of fresh skunk vine with one to two chicken egg yolks. Finely chop the skunk vine and mix it well with the eggs. Line a pan with a banana leaf, pour the mixture onto it, and pan-fry without oil or with very little.

Fried skunk vine egg is a nutritious, appetizing dish suitable for any meal, whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This dish enhances skunk vine's beneficial effects on the stomach, supports the digestive system, and improves symptoms of stomach-duodenal pain, reducing abdominal pain and strengthening the spleen.

Limiting fat during preparation helps prevent the digestive system from being overloaded, while preserving valuable essences, according to Dr. Vu. This combination helps quickly reduce symptoms of cramping abdominal pain, bloating, and bloody stools, also providing healthy nutrition for bodies weakened by illness.

"However, during preparation, special attention must be paid to hygiene because the fine hairs on the leaf surface easily trap dirt and parasites", the doctor advised. Additionally, patients need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, strictly avoiding alcohol, beer, and spicy foods. In cases of chronic colitis or signs of worsening, timely medical intervention is necessary.

Skunk vine is a natural remedy, so achieving its effects in treating stomach ailments takes time. Treatment effectiveness also depends on the patient's individual constitution.
