The secret to a 40-year-old woman achieving a biological age of 26

Without resorting to extreme diets or exhausting workouts, Nguyen Hien, 40, regained a slender waist and achieved a biological age of 26 by changing her nutritional mindset.

Nguyen Hien weighed 53 kg, not considered overweight by any standard. For years after giving birth to two children, she would suck in her stomach when wearing fitted clothes. Her 60 cm waistline from her youth had vanished, replaced by a soft lower abdomen. Hien used to comfort herself with a common phrase among women: "Everyone is like this after childbirth."

Three years ago, the former bank employee in Hai Phong coincidentally joined a body transformation program. She didn't have high expectations, only wanting to see if she could reduce her waistline by a few centimeters.

After three months, her weight remained largely unchanged, decreasing only slightly by 0,5 kg to 52,5 kg. However, her upper abdomen decreased by 6 cm, and her lower abdomen by 8 cm. Her body's muscle, fat, and water ratios changed significantly. Her biological age (bio-age) was measured at 26, 11 years younger than her chronological age at the time.

Biological age reflects the body's true level of aging, independent of the birth year on paper. It is determined through saliva, blood, or urine sample tests to assess biological markers such as chronic inflammation, cellular elasticity, and metabolic function. A 2023 study published in the journal Nature Aging showed that lifestyle, especially nutrition, can slow or significantly reverse biological age more than genetic factors in many cases.

What Hien did not do during those three months was cut carbohydrates, engage in heavy workouts, or skip family meals. "I still ate shrimp, fish, meat, vegetables, and fresh fruit every day. Nothing fancy or expensive," she said.

The only change was in the order and structure of her meals. She adopted the principle of eating vegetables first, followed by protein, and finally carbohydrates. A 2015 study from Cornell University indicated that eating vegetables and protein before carbohydrates helps slow glucose absorption and reduces post-meal blood sugar spikes by 29%, thereby limiting fat storage and controlling cravings. She also limited processed foods, refined sugar, and greasy items, while applying the "hand portion" rule to estimate servings of each nutrient group.

Regarding exercise, she did light cardio combined with yoga, two to three sessions each week, each session lasting 30 minutes.

Nguyen Hien described her perspective on the body: "The body is like a machine. The issue isn't forcing it to run faster, but fueling it correctly. When properly nourished, the body regulates itself." This is why she didn't prioritize high-intensity workouts, and her results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, at least for her body and lifestyle.

Nearly two years later, she still maintains those metrics without feeling pressured. However, what Hien did not expect was that her body transformation journey would lead her to a completely different career path. She quit her office job, pursued in-depth studies in nutritional science and human anatomy, and then became an online physique coach.

Her clients are mostly postpartum mothers struggling to rediscover themselves. In her coaching sessions, she guides them on how to manage their progress using specific body metrics rather than subjective feelings. The core objective is not to pursue strict perfect standards, but to focus on reducing fat, increasing muscle, and safely changing lifestyle, even during breastfeeding. She encourages her clients to listen to their body's responses after each meal and proactively eliminate unhealthy habits.

"You don't need to do anything extreme. Start with the smallest steps like eating right, understanding yourself, and being patient with your body," Hien said.

Nguyen Hien's body became noticeably firmer after three months, thanks to optimized muscle-fat-water ratios. Photo: Provided by subject.
