Three people were hospitalized with grade two anaphylactic shock after consuming a traditional Central Highlands dish at Mai La restaurant in residential group 2, Cu Ebur, Buon Ma Thuot ward, Dak Lak. The incident occurred after they ate braised beef entrails with bitter eggplant and taro stems. They were part of a group of 12 diners, with these three exhibiting the most severe symptoms, including burning and swelling in their mouths and difficulty breathing.
Four other individuals who only tasted the dish's broth experienced milder symptoms such as a numb tongue and itchy mouth, and were monitored at home. An investigation by the Dak Lak Department of Health, conducted on 2/4, revealed the presence of calcium oxalate crystals in needle, cluster, and spiky forms within the ingredients. These crystals, if not properly prepared, can cause itching and burning sensations for consumers.
However, the investigation faced a hurdle as Mai La restaurant, owned by Mai La Ecological Garden Co., Ltd., failed to retain food samples as mandated by law. This omission prevented authorities from obtaining samples for further testing to conclusively determine the cause of the allergic reactions. Consequently, the Dak Lak Department of Health issued an 8 million dong fine to Mai La company for violating food sample retention regulations.
All three patients have since been discharged from Tay Nguyen Regional General Hospital and are seeking compensation from the restaurant owner for damages incurred. The Dak Lak health sector is currently consolidating the case file, indicating further actions are being prepared regarding the incident.
