Anh Tu, 35, tried limiting late nights, reducing stress, and using eye care products, but his condition did not improve. Doctor Nguyen Ngoc Tran, a specialist in dermatology and aesthetic dermatology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, explained that eye bags, like Anh Tu's, are common, appearing as swollen lower eyelids. Causes include aging, fluid retention, orbital fat herniation, or changes in the skin and soft tissue structure around the eyes.
Doctor Tran explained that the periorbital area has thin skin and a weak supporting tissue system. As collagen and elastin decline with age or environmental factors, the septum holding the fat loosens, allowing fat to push forward and form noticeable eye bags.
Beyond natural aging, lifestyle significantly contributes to eye bags. Regular outdoor activities without UV protection can break down collagen, accelerating premature aging around the eyes. Prolonged late nights also disrupt microcirculation and reduce skin recovery, making sagging and fat accumulation more evident.

The doctor prescribed RF microneedling technology for Anh Tu, with a course of 4-6 sessions spaced four weeks apart. This method targets the dermis, stimulating collagen and elastin production. It also helps firm tissue and reduce mild fat accumulation in the lower eyelids, avoiding surgical intervention for less severe cases.
Following treatment, the skin under his eyes significantly improved; his eye bags reduced, skin became firmer, and his face appeared refreshed.
Doctor Tran cautioned that many confuse eye bags with dark circles or typical signs of fatigue. The real cause lies in the underlying structure, making conventional remedies ineffective. Eye bags are not just an aesthetic concern but also reflect aging. If they persist, worsen, or do not improve after rest, patients should seek early medical advice to identify the correct cause. Addressing eye bags in their early, mild stages leads to more effective treatment and limits invasive procedures.
To prevent eye bags, it is crucial to get sufficient sleep, protect the periorbital skin from sunlight—especially during outdoor activities—and ensure proper moisturizing and skincare.
