The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an urgent recall of two male enhancement chocolate products, Gold Lion and iLum, from Gear Isle, a Northern California company specializing in sexual enhancement products. The recall was initiated after the products were found to contain undeclared sildenafil and tadalafil, active ingredients commonly found in prescription erectile dysfunction medications like Viagra and Cialis. These substances pose a significant health risk, particularly to men taking nitrate-containing drugs for cardiovascular conditions.
The recalled products include Gold Lion male enhancement chocolate (packet), with an expiry date of 6/2027, and iLum male sexual support chocolate, expiring on 25/12/2027. Both products were distributed across the United States, Fox8 reported on 31/3.
"The use of products containing undeclared active ingredients sildenafil and tadalafil can be dangerous for consumers," Fox8 cited an FDA statement. "These ingredients can interact with nitrates in certain prescription medications, such as nitroglycerin, potentially causing a severe drop in blood pressure that could be life-threatening."

To date, Gear Isle has reported no health issues linked to the consumption of these two chocolates. However, the company is actively notifying customers about the recall and has initiated procedures for returns and refunds.
Both Gold Lion and iLum chocolates were marketed as dietary supplements, a product category that typically faces less stringent regulation compared to prescription drugs and conventional food items. The FDA emphasizes that it does not approve the safety or effectiveness of dietary supplements; instead, manufacturers bear the primary responsibility for ensuring their products are safe before reaching the market. The FDA advises consumers: "Consumers should immediately contact their doctor or healthcare provider if they experience any suspected problems related to the use of these products."
