What are the early warning signs of breast cancer?

I am 39 years old and my maternal aunt has breast cancer. Is my risk of developing the disease high, and what signs help detect breast cancer at an early stage? (Minh An, Ho Chi Minh City)

For Minh An, 39, whose maternal aunt has breast cancer, understanding personal risk and early signs is vital. While a maternal aunt is not a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter), a family history suggests caution due to genetics, advises Master, Doctor, First-Degree Specialist Huynh Ba Tan from the Department of Breast - Head and Neck Surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital Ho Chi Minh City.

Breast cancer often develops quietly in the milk ducts, about 85% of cases, or in the breast lobules. Early stages usually show few clear symptoms, making self-detection difficult. However, some signs can suggest breast cancer:

Breast or chest pain can be an indicator. This pain may be sharp or persistent, unrelated to menstruation or pregnancy. Such symptoms require a medical exam, including ultrasound or mammogram, to find the cause.

Pain in the shoulder, upper back, or around the shoulder blade can also be a warning sign. As a breast tumor grows, it can affect the rib cage and impact back nerves, causing discomfort. If you have dull, continuous pain that persists and does not respond to painkillers, see a doctor.

Breast itching, especially if severe with redness, thickened skin, or an "orange peel" texture, often indicates inflammatory breast cancer.

Other changes can signal breast cancer: yellow, green, pus-like, or bloody nipple discharge. Swelling in part or all of the breast, causing asymmetry, suggests a growing mass. The body's reaction to cancerous changes can also lead to abnormal lymph nodes in the armpit or collarbone. Additionally, if there is nipple retraction, or if the skin around the nipple is wrinkled, shrunken, or has unusual bumps, seek medical care.

For Minh An, 39, with family history, regular check-ups are key. Visiting hospitals with specialized Breast Surgery or Oncology departments for combined mammography and ultrasound screenings is vital for early detection. Finding breast cancer early improves treatment and reduces complications.
