Vasomotor rhinitis is a form of non-allergic, non-infectious nasal inflammation without a specific cause. It is linked to dysregulation of the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory nerves in the nasal lining. Common symptoms include nasal congestion and clear runny nose. These symptoms often start or worsen with sudden temperature changes, cold air, strong chemical odors, or stress. It can lead to complications such as headaches, eustachian tube dysfunction, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic cough, and asthma.
Allergic rhinitis is a condition where the nasal lining becomes irritated and inflamed due to an overactive immune response to environmental allergens like pollen, animal dander, dust mites, smoke, or other allergens. It often comes with episodes of sneezing, itchy nose, itchy eyes, and recurs seasonally or upon allergen exposure.
Treatment for vasomotor rhinitis primarily focuses on symptom control and limiting exposure to triggers. Doctors may prescribe topical nasal corticosteroids, anticholinergic medications, or oral antihistamines. If medical treatment fails to control symptoms, doctors may consider surgery.

Surgical options include turbinate reduction surgery, which improves nasal airflow, reduces swelling, and maintains the physiological function of the nasal turbinates, along with related symptoms. Vidian neurectomy, which involves cutting or burning the Vidian nerve, is another intervention option for patients with severe vasomotor rhinitis, helping reduce nasal discharge and chronic runny nose symptoms.
Patients should avoid sudden temperature changes, limit exposure to cold air, chemical odors, and prolonged air conditioning environments. It is advisable to stay warm, maintain appropriate air humidity, and rinse the nose with saline solution to reduce nasal lining swelling. Use medications as prescribed by a doctor, and avoid overusing vasoconstrictor nasal sprays, as they can worsen the condition. If symptoms persist, consultation with an ear, nose, and throat specialist is recommended for proper evaluation and treatment.
