When to seek medical attention for neck and shoulder pain?

I frequently experience neck and shoulder pain that appears and subsides quickly; is this dangerous? When should I seek medical attention? (Nguyen Huong, Can Tho)

Answer:

Neck and shoulder pain is a sensation of stiffness, aching, or sharp pain in the muscles surrounding the neck and shoulders. This condition is often not dangerous, primarily resulting from poor cervical spine posture during daily activities and work. It can improve with proper care and treatment, such as warm compresses, massage, rest, and gentle exercise.

However, neck and shoulder pain can sometimes signal underlying medical conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or nerve compression. If not detected and treated promptly, these conditions can lead to severe complications.

You should seek medical attention if you experience warning signs such as:

Pain lasting longer than one to two weeks without improvement, potentially worsening despite rest and common pain relief methods.

Pain radiating from the neck and shoulders down to the arm and hand, accompanied by numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness, making gripping or performing intricate movements difficult. Occasionally, patients may also experience shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest tightness.

Stiff neck, inability to bend, extend, or turn the neck, with severe pain during movement.

Neurological abnormalities such as dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, blurred vision, nausea, or loss of balance.

Swelling and redness in the shoulder area, along with signs of inflammation or fever.

Sudden onset of pain following an injury, such as an accident or fall.

Frequent recurrence of pain.

If neck and shoulder pain frequently recurs, you should seek early medical evaluation to identify the exact cause and determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Depending on the cause and severity of the condition, doctors prescribe suitable treatment methods. These include posture adjustments, lifestyle modifications, anti-inflammatory drugs, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, or corticosteroid injections. Physical therapy, hot compresses, or cold compresses can also be beneficial. For neck and shoulder pain involving nerve root or spinal cord compression, doctors may recommend surgery.
