Why drink water before morning coffee?

Drinking one glass of water before your morning coffee helps rehydrate after sleep, supports digestion, and promotes alertness.

Rehydrate your body after a night

According to Very Well Health, during 7-8 hours of sleep, the body continuously loses water through breath, sweat, and metabolic activities. Many people wake up mildly dehydrated without realizing it. This often causes dry mouth and thirst in the morning.

Drinking one glass of water immediately after waking replenishes lost fluids and supports blood circulation. This is a simple way to establish a habit of drinking enough water throughout the day.

Helps the body wake up

One glass of water can help "wake up" the body's physiological functions after sleep, reducing initial fatigue. After adequate rehydration, your coffee will still provide its full alerting effects, with your body already sufficiently hydrated.

Reduces stomach irritation

Coffee can stimulate the stomach to produce more acid, especially when consumed on an empty stomach. For those with sensitive stomachs, this easily causes discomfort, heartburn, or an uneasy feeling after drinking. Drinking water beforehand can moisten the mouth and esophagus, encouraging the stomach to operate more gently after many hours without food or drink.

Limits anxiety and restlessness

Some individuals are highly sensitive to caffeine and may experience a racing heart, shaky hands, or restlessness after their first cup of coffee. This condition is more likely to occur when drinking coffee on an empty stomach.

Pre-hydrating with water helps the body maintain better fluid balance. As a result, some individuals may experience less dry mouth, dizziness, or anxiety after drinking coffee, according to Times of India.

Caffeine also increases alertness, reduces drowsiness, and supports concentration, especially early in the day. Coffee contains antioxidant compounds, which help protect cells from free radical damage.

The ideal time to drink coffee is typically one to two hours after waking, preferably after breakfast, when the body has already received water and food. Healthy adults should consume coffee in moderation, about two to three cups daily, ensuring the total caffeine intake does not exceed 400 mg per day. It is recommended to drink pure coffee and limit added sugar, condensed milk, and other additives.
