Andrew Pickering, 50, was convicted of two counts of theft by Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court and sentenced to 12 months in prison. His accomplice, Daniel Reay, 46, also charged with theft, was ordered to complete an alcohol treatment and rehabilitation program.
Police reported that Andrew broke into a gas station in Ouston, Durham, in the early hours of 21/10/2025, causing an estimated 3,219 GBP in damages.
Surveillance video released by Durham Constabulary on 13/1 shows Andrew entering the convenience store of the gas station through the roof, breaking a tobacco counter shield, and stuffing items into his bag. He then returned to the initial room, setting up a folding ladder to escape the scene through the roof opening.

However, Andrew's plan failed as he repeatedly climbed the ladder, falling from the ceiling four times. Each fall caused the stolen cigarette packets to scatter across the floor.
After the fourth failed attempt, Andrew opted for a more conventional and safer exit through the door. On his way, he also grabbed several bottles of alcohol from behind the cash register, simultaneously disorganizing the store by bumping into and knocking over display shelves due to slipping.
According to police, a scene examination revealed a significant amount of blood, later confirmed to be Andrew's.
Police also released video footage of Andrew's interrogation, where he clumsily spilled his cup of water.
In a statement, Durham Constabulary remarked: "It's not about how many times you fall, but how many times you get up."
