Dating a suspect to investigate a 37-year-old murder

Fascinated by true crime podcasts, a woman approached and lived with a suspect to extract information, hoping to solve a 37-year-old unsolved murder.

The woman recounted her "reckless" plan during a hearing on 22/7 in Brisbane regarding the murder of 15-year-old Annette Mason.

Annette was beaten to death at the home she shared with friends in Toowoomba in 11/1989. To date, no one has been charged in connection with the teenager's death.

In 2025, the woman, whose identity was withheld for legal reasons, contacted police, claiming new evidence. She stated a suspect had told her previously undisclosed details about the murder during their time living together.

The woman had listened to numerous podcasts and news reports about the unsolved murder before seeking out the suspect. "Initially, we were friends, then it gradually evolved into a romantic relationship," the woman said.

She admitted to being reckless and taking risks by attempting to solve the case herself but said she was "proud of what I did."

Annette's body was found in bed. The cause of death was determined to be trauma from a blunt object to the head. The weapon was believed to be a log found in the laundry room.

The woman testified that she had spoken about Annette with the suspect. "He said she was assaulted before arriving home, then struck in the head," the woman recounted.

According to her, he had previously claimed innocence, stating that a police officer had killed the victim. "He said, "that's why all the evidence disappeared, and they are just trying to blame me,"" the woman recalled.

When the victim's family lawyer questioned the alleged statements from the suspect, she affirmed: "It's clear he killed Annette Mason. He did it."

The woman denied that her statements were based on details previously published in podcasts and news reports.

Also testifying at the hearing on 22/7, the suspect described the true crime podcast-obsessed woman as "crazy" and claimed they only had a friendship.

The suspect stated that the woman's accusations were "completely untrue" and he did not know why she made them. "She was a very cheerful, approachable person and a good friend," the suspect said.

The investigation into Annette's death was closed in 1991 but was reopened in 2018 following pressure from the victim's family. The most recent hearing took place in 2022.

In the coming months, parties will submit written presentations for the investigation.
