William Brock was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years on 2/2, following his murder conviction last month.
Court records show that in 3/2024, Brock shot Lo-Letha Toland-Hall, a female driver, 6 times outside his South Charleston, Ohio, home. He mistakenly believed she was involved in a phone scam scheme.

Before the shooting, Brock had received calls from scammers. They demanded he withdraw 12,000 USD to bail out a relative reportedly arrested by police. When Brock realized the callers were lying, they began threatening him, instructing him to give money to someone waiting outside his house. Investigators later determined this person was Toland-Hall, who was also a victim of the same scam.
Toland-Hall, 61, had been dispatched to Brock's home to pick up a package. She was entirely unaware of the scam call or the demand for money.
Upon Toland-Hall's arrival, Brock pointed a gun at her, threatening to shoot. She attempted to explain she worked for Uber and pleaded with him not to fire. Toland-Hall was ultimately shot 6 times and died in the hospital.

In court, Brock's lawyer argued the shooting was in self-defense, citing threats from the scammer. Brock testified he felt threatened by the driver's presence. However, the prosecutor stated Toland-Hall was unarmed and posed no threat when Brock fired the shots.
Brock was convicted of murder, but the scammers responsible have not yet been apprehended.
Prosecutor Daniel Driscoll stated after the verdict: "Two families lost loved ones because of this incident; no one is a winner here. The truly regrettable aspect is that the scammers who caused all of this have not yet faced justice".
