Initial information indicates that on the morning of the incident, an unidentified man brought the cake box into room E 609 of the trauma and orthopedics department. He visited a 24-year-old male patient from Tan An commune, Vinh Long province, placing the box under the patient's bed before leaving.
Shortly after, the patient's mother opened the cake box, which then exploded. She sustained scratches to her hands and feet. The blast also scorched the bedside cabinet, pillow, blanket, and mat. Medical staff and the patient's family used a local fire extinguisher to put out the flames immediately.
Hospital staff inspected the exploded box, finding a scorched water pipe casing, 114 mm in diameter, along with electronic components, an alcohol bottle, and copper wire.
To ensure patient safety and psychological stability, the hospital relocated all patients from the affected room to other rooms for continued observation and treatment.
