Around 9:40 PM, a resident called the police after discovering a bag containing weapons and a taser issued by the Metropolitan Police Service on a south London street.
Within seven minutes of receiving the call, officers arrived at the scene and safely recovered the items. "The bag was believed to have been dropped by officers on duty a short time before the resident found it", authorities stated.
The police service acknowledged the concern this oversight could cause, and an internal review was immediately launched to clarify accountability.
A spokesperson for London Mayor Sir Sadiq said: "This is a very serious incident. The Metropolitan Police Service must take all steps to ensure such an incident never happens again".
